Thao Thatrath governs the eastern direction, as the god of Gandharvas, or the lower level of deities. The lower Gandharvas are wood nymphs or Mae Ya Nang, among others. The middle level is born in the Himmapān forest, and the higher level resides in the Cātummahārājika heaven. Some say that Gandharvas have musical abilities. In Chinese belief they are noted for holding the pipa (a Chinese instrument similar to a guitar); in Japanese belief they hold a sword or a trident.
