Phra Sangkajjai, the Asita Mahāsāvaka "of fortune," is an arahant, one of the 80 Asita Mahāsāvakas in the Buddha Gotama’s teaching. He is regarded as one of the ettatakkha (great exemplars) for his ability to explain things in detail. Maha Kakjani has another name, Kajjāna (or Kajjāyna). In Japan he is commonly known as "Kasennen" (Kasennen). In Thailand, besides the name given in Pali, he is also known as "Phra Sangkajjai" or "Phra Sangkrajai."

Phra Sangkajjai has a stout, pot-bellied appearance, which signifies abundance and fortune. He is one of the senior disciples and is classified as ettatakkha. The figure of Phra Sangkajjai is distinctive enough that you can immediately tell which disciple he represents. In summary, among the 80 holy disciples, 41 of the ettatakkha, only Phra Sangkajjai is depicted so prominently. The iconography of Phra Sangkajjai is very popular; Mahayana and Hinayana Chinese styles are especially common. The Chinese depictions of Phra Sangkajjai are more widely produced in urban areas, based on the belief that “whoever venerates Phra Sangkajjai will gain great auspiciousness, wealth, rank, and prosperity.”
