Goddess Kaliis one of the forms of Goddess Sri Maha Uma Devi, or Goddess Uma Devi, the consort of Lord Shiva, one of the three supreme deities of the universe according to Brahman-Hindu beliefs. Goddess Kali was born from the penance of Goddess Uma Devi and performed sacred rituals in the Himmapan forest to eliminate the demon named Mathu or Tarun (the Tarun demon), who had received a boon from Lord Shiva to become immortal but became arrogant with the boon and caused trouble for people, gods, and angels.

In the battle against the demon, Goddess Kali used a sword to behead the Tarun demon. However, when the blood dripped to the ground, the demon multiplied with each drop of blood, forcing Goddess Kali to drink the demon's blood until she became plump, with blood flowing from the corners of her mouth, holding the head of the Tarun demon and other demon heads, which she strung together as a necklace. Ultimately, Goddess Kali emerged victorious, leading to the creation of her idol, depicted as a dark-skinned woman with a fierce appearance to represent her power over evil.
